The Economics Tutor provides premier economics education to JC A Level and IB students of Economics.
Tell us about yourself?
I have always had passion for teaching economics but took several relevant detours along the way such as in government policymaking and then entrepreneurship. As it turned out, these experiences have enabled me to teach economics in an even more insightful and exciting manner as I have many real world experiences requiring the application of various economics theories.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Spend more time in relationships. That is an opportunity cost that we most ignore or under-value.
What problem does your business solve?
Students are not able to fully understand what is being taught in schools and much less apply the concepts in examinations. At The Economics Tutor, we are well known to build understanding and coach students to apply.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
Most students these days have high aspirations of entering top universities and studying in highly competitive fields such as medicine, law, computer science and others. We empower them to achieve their aspirations.
What is your magic sauce?
We have methods such as quirky analogies and stories that are borne out of my personal experiences and perhaps my quirky fun-loving personality as well. Once students get it (along with laughs), they enjoy the subject, enjoy studying it and soon the good grades flow.
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
We have just embarked on seriously expanding into the General Paper space. Over the years, we have acceded to a few requests to teach GP and with great success. Now that our economics tuition business is very well established, we decided to start www.AceGPTuition.sg to help students better understand the world we live in, form well-informed opinions and to score in the A Level GP examinations as well as they now do for Economics. It is a natural extension of our offerings as studying Economics involves global issues as well and my real world experiences also offer a lot of insights that GP students can benefit from.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
The biggest challenges I have faced is competitor sabotage. More than once. It is so sad that even in this field of education, we have such unethical players. However, the challenges have made me even more determined to add even more value to our students. We care little about the competition, we just care about doing more and doing better for students every single year.
How do people get involved/buy into your vision?
If there are folks out there who are keen on an education venture and believe that our business and brands can make an impact in their communities, we will be willing to discuss possibilities. 🙂
